Beating The Odds: Acupuncture and IVF PDF Print E-mail
I knew it was crucial for Hilary to be involved in the actual embryo transfer procedure. She started ringing colleagues and contacts on Harley Street to see whether they could provide us with a bed so I could still have acupuncture before and after embryo transfer. In a last-ditch effort, I asked the clinic again whether I could bring Hilary in. This time, the medical director said “yes”, they would find me a reclining chair and a screen, so we would not be disturbed.

I will never forget the telephone call from the clinic to tell me that I was pregnant – that my beta HCG levels were 128 – a remarkably healthy reading. Since that glorious day when my mother, my partner and I cried in a public parking lot as I received the news on my mobile phone, I have delighted in this pregnancy. Hilary has taken care of the morning sickness, still follows up on my diet and lifestyle and will prepare me for labour. She is our little baby’s “health godmother”! She will be among the first people I tell when the baby is born.

I hope to have a second baby before I am 43. I know that medical studies and naysayers paint gloomy pictures of mothers of “advanced maternal age” but I’ve beaten the odds once with Hilary’s help and I know we can do it again together.

A poem by Jelaluddin Rumi...

When the time comes for the embryo
to receive the spirit of life,
at that time the sun begins to help.
This embryo is brought into movement,
for the sun quickens it with spirit.

From the other stars this embryo
   received only an impression,
until the sun shone upon it.
 How did it become connected
        with the shining sun
            in the womb?

By ways hidden from our senses:
the way whereby gold is nourished,
the way a common stone becomes a garnet
          and the ruby red,
     the way fruit is ripened,
  and the way courage comes
        to one distraught
             with fear

(I,3775-82)

"Hilary Haynes was instrumental in bringing our fertility retreats to London. Immersing herself with the patients' healing process, Hilary brought her professional skills as a naturopath, an acupuncturist, and a true healer to make this our finest retreat thus far. I recommend her highly as a reproductive healer, and am proud to call her a colleague and a friend."
